Saturday, March 25 — WPI softball doubleheader vs. Westfield State, 3:30 p.m., Rooftop Field, Worcester Polytechnic Institute, 151 Salisbury St. So we told you about star sophomore Ama Biney as her record-breaking basketball season was ending and just before her much-anticipated second season on the diamond was to begin. Well, go ahead and get used to the record-breaking — not only from Biney, but from fellow standout Nina Murphy-Cook and an impressive roster of Engineers off to an 8-2 start.
In 10 games [as of Friday, March 18] the National Player of the Year candidate is batting .645 (20 of 31) with 16 runs, 4 doubles, 2 triples, 2 home runs, 7 RBI and 9 stolen bases. (classmate Murphy-Cook, also on the national watchlist, was hitting .486 with 12 runs and 11 steals.) The Holy Name product, who leads off and plays center field, was recently named Div. III player of the week.
